Visiting DICE – Your Questions Answered
Many of you had some questions for DICE about Battlefield Vietnam. We bring you their answers.
As a warm-up to our visit to DICE Canada, we brought along a bunch of questions posed by you, the readers. Read on to find out how the developers answered them.
Superman_has_gone_MAD:
I’d like to know what theme the next Battlefield game will have, since you’ve hired the creators of Desert Combat.
The developers weren’t much inclined to talk about future Battlefield games. During our visit they did admit that they are working on a new project, though. Whether this is a new Battlefield game or not, they didn’t reveal.
As for Trauma Studios (the developers of Desert Combat), DICE Canada are not involved in their project. They did reveal, though, that we would all be much more enlightened after E3.
Are you considering an expansion pack for Battlefield Vietnam?
This hasn’t been decided yet. We do not currently have anything along those lines in production.
Amraam:
Has any steps been taken to prevent everybody camping around the spawn points of helicopters and planes?
No rules have been implemented to stop players from doing that. Generally focus has been on improving the conditions for infantry so it’s less necessary to be in a plane or a tank to survive.
Mujaffa.dk:
Could we get a decent campaign please?
The campaign will work much the same way as in Battlefield 1942. Much care has been taken to give players a better experience when playing with bots.
Funkadelic:
Why haven’t you created a pilot or similar class to get rid of plane campers?
This would be against the principles of Battlefield. We do not want to include artificial limitations that may sound like a good idea in theory but just serve as annoyances in real game situations. The basic premise is that everybody can use what they like on a map and we do not want to change this.
How come no demo has been released?
The developers had the choice between getting the game released on time or making a demo. They chose the former. Whether or not a demo will be released depends on sales figures after the game hits the streets.
Since Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam are multiplayer games, how come you haven’t made Battlefield Vietnam more clan-friendly with customisable clan logos on uniforms, group indexing on the radar and so forth?
The developers plan to release a lot of logos as free content in the near future. It’s not yet decided if it will be possible to design your own logos – mainly because of the possibility of offensive logos.
Why has it been made possible to sit in a tank and fire while it is transported by a helicopter?
This is possible from the standpoint that ‘if you can do it in real life you can do it in the game’. It’s by no means easy to aim while dangling from a rope below a helicopter, but it’s a lot of fun. The developers didn’t see any problems with this tactic play-wise and therefore this option is kept in the finished game.
What about players in helicopters just picking up opponents in tanks?
First of all you need to be stationary to be picked up and during transport you can always just press a directional button to let go. Of course if you’re too far from the ground you will be damaged.
What flags will the Vietnamese be allowed to move, only their own stationary one or all of them?
They cannot move all their flags. Engineers are able to pick up mobile spawn points and place them elsewhere on the map. Most maps that allow this give the Vietcong access to two to four mobile spawn points besides the stationary ones.
The American side also has mobile spawn points that have to be placed by helicopter. There are no more than two on a map.
Pkk888:
Have any gameplay elements been added to benefit team play? For instance receiving points for healing players and repairing vehicles?
To encourage team play you now have to outnumber the enemy to take their flag. Repairing stuff will not result in more points as it is too easily exploited.
Dirk Diggler:
I’ve seen a kit (Heavy Assault) that has an M60 and a LAW grenade launcher. The M60 seems to be the best weapon against vehicles. Which disadvantages does the Heavy Assault class have?
Heavy Assault
is a strong kit and the enemy can see this due to the characteristically heavy weapons. Therefore you are bound to be the main target, since you pose the biggest threat. Reloading the M60 also takes a considerable amount of time, during which you are particularly vulnerable. The M60 also “sprays” the bullets a lot over distance.
The original Battlefield 1942 was developed by DICE Sweden. Have they had any influence on the development of Battlefield Vietnam?
DICE Sweden have mainly served as consultants. DICE Canada had complete creative control over the development of the game.
Steintz:
Will there be any changes to the admin commands, tools and stats?

|
| Gotcha! |
|
|
The Admin interface will function the same way as in Battlefield 1942. Some changes will be made in future upgrades though.
Stats were not given high priority during production but it may be added later as free content.
Will an SDK be released, allowing users to create mods more easily?
An SDK will be included in the game and it will be updated from time to time.
Will the game have PunkBuster from day one?
Yes.
Will spawn rape be prevented one way or another?
Since all spawn points can be taken over this should no longer be a concern – at least not as it has occurred before. If your team possesses all bases and all opponents are dead, you’ve won the game.
MagnusKL:
Ladders were, in my opinion, not very well implemented in Battlefield 1942. Will they be different in this game?
No, they will work the same way as in Battlefield 1942.
jedi1:
Is it crucial to have a DirectX 9 compatible graphics card for running the game?
If your graphics card doesn’t support DirectX 9 you will miss out on some of the more spectacular effects in the game, such as shades on tanks and planes and other details. The game requires a GeForce 3 or similar as a minimum.
Will the game support 64-bit in the future, for the benefit of AMD 64 owners?
There are currently no plans for this. It may be considered at a later time.
koal:
Will hit boxes be noticeable in Battlefield Vietnam? This didn’t seem to be the case in Battlefield 1942, where close combat hits connected very randomly.
The hit boxes are divided into head, torso and limbs. This means that the enemy will die faster from headshots, but more powerful weapons can drain hit-points faster.
Are there any plans for in-game voice support?
This should also be released in the future as free content.
currant:
How’s Battlefield TV coming along?
We’re still working on that. First step is to include a spectator mode in one of the first updates.
The_KELRaTH:
I’ve read that Battlefield Vietnam isn’t compatible with ATI’s 3x0 graphics cards when AA and AF are enabled. Is this correct?
There are no known problems with ATI’s graphics cards. Some minor problems have occurred with NVidia cards, though, which has resulted in minor graphics glitches. NVidia have promised to correct this with a new driver before the game is released.

But, good news on some of the items, it's just too bad they won't fix the m60/law toting Uber Rambo soldier of Doom.
Please consider these changes. I am a server admin for
a 32 player server and hope to see these changes
1. Take the rocket away from the M-60 soldier
2. Make the M-60 and RPD heavy machine guns identical
Use the M-60 current settings and remove a little of the
long range accuracy and apply to BOTH weapons
3. Make the AK-47 identical to the M-16. The AK-47 recoils too much
4. Give server admins the ability to shut off DEATH CAM
The Death Cam is totally wothlesss in a great game like this
5. Fix the score board - It is UGLY and VERY Hard to read
6. The choppers are a little too hard to shoot down
Tweak their settings to make them a little easier to destroy
7. A modified "Team Balalce" is urgently needed
Make it so when any team is unbalanced by more than 2 players
existing players can't switch sides.I see this all the time
players on the losing side always go to the winning side.
Using the "Team Balance" setting is unacceptible because
friends or clan mates keep getting switched from side to side
and that takes away from the "Team Work" aspect and fun of
playing with regulars on the same side
Thanks!
